Wrist Rests and Palm Rests — Do They Help or Hurt Your Wrists?

You’ve been typing for an hour straight, forearms braced against the edge of the desk, and a faint tingling starts creeping into your fingers. A coworker points at the foam pad in front of their keyboard and says it fixed their wrist pain instantly. So you order one too. But wrist rests are one of those products where the marketing outpaces the science — and a handful of ergonomics studies suggest that using one the wrong way can actually push pressure inside your wrist higher, not lower.

Wrist rests aren’t simply good or bad — the research shows the outcome depends almost entirely on how they’re used. Letting your wrists sink down and rest on the pad while your fingers are actively typing tends to raise pressure inside the carpal tunnel, while using the same pad only during pauses, with hands hovering while you type, supports a more neutral posture. What’s Actually Happening Inside the Wrist

The carpal tunnel is a narrow passage on the palm side of the wrist where the median nerve and several tendons pass through together. When the wrist bends, or something presses on the tunnel from underneath, pressure inside that passage rises. A frequently cited lab study in the journal Human Factors, led by researcher David Rempel, measured carpal tunnel pressure directly in twenty healthy volunteers typing with their wrists held at different angles. The setup kept participants’ hands hovering, with no palm or wrist support allowed, so the numbers reflect posture alone rather than contact pressure from a pad.

The Numbers Behind Wrist Angle and Pressure

The results were consistent: the more the wrist extended upward away from neutral, the higher the pressure climbed inside the tunnel. Typing itself, even in a neutral position, added a small but measurable bump in pressure over simply holding the hand still.

That 4 kPa mark matters because the same research area has flagged it as a threshold worth watching: pressure at or above roughly that level, sustained on a nerve for a couple of hours, has been linked to lasting physiological changes in animal and cadaver models. Why Leaning on a Pad While You Type Can Backfire

Here’s where wrist rests get complicated. The Rempel study’s own authors noted that in real offices, people routinely rest their palms and wrists on a support surface while actively typing — something their lab protocol specifically prevented to isolate posture. Their discussion pointed out that doing so would push pressure even higher than the numbers above, since you’d be adding direct contact load on top of whatever angle the wrist is already at.

Canada’s occupational health agency, CCOHS, echoes this concern in its own guidance: leaning the wrists heavily on a rest, or on the bare edge of a desk, for extended periods can compress the carpal tunnel area and restrict blood flow, on top of possibly pinching the median nerve. Some ergonomics reviewers go further, arguing that wrist rests provide no reliable protective benefit and can even encourage exactly the static, sustained pressure they’re marketed to prevent.

What OSHA and CCOHS Actually Recommend

The official guidance from OSHA’s computer workstation eTools splits the difference: wrist and palm supports can help reduce muscle activity and encourage a neutral wrist angle, but only when they’re used correctly. Their core rule is that hands should stay elevated and move freely above the rest while you’re actually typing or clicking — the pad is meant to catch the heel of the palm during breaks in typing, not to be leaned on continuously while your fingers are moving.

OSHA also specifies that a support should be soft, rounded at the edges, and at least 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) deep, since anything narrower or firmer concentrates pressure into a smaller strip of tissue. Using a Wrist Rest Without Working Against Yourself

  • Treat it as a resting spot for pauses, not a cushion to type on top of — let your hands float above it while your fingers are moving.
  • Check the height: the pad should sit level with the keys or mouse buttons so your wrist doesn’t have to bend upward to reach it.
  • Favor a wider, softer, contoured pad over a thin or firm one — that 1.5-inch depth minimum keeps pressure spread out rather than concentrated on one point.
  • Pair it with regular micro-breaks; no pad fully offsets hours of static posture, so standing up and shaking out your hands every so often still matters.

Wrist rests aren’t a scam, but they aren’t a guaranteed fix either — the actual research points to a use-dependent effect rather than a simple yes-or-no verdict.
